NMEO
National Mission on Edible Oils (NMEO)
India is one of the largest consumers of edible oil in the world, but it imports a significant portion (around 60%) of its edible oil requirement.
To reduce this dependency and boost domestic production, the Government of India launched the National Mission on Edible Oils (NMEO).
Objective of NMEO
- To increase the production and productivity of oilseed crops and oil palm.
- To reduce edible oil imports and move towards self-reliance (Aatmanirbharta).
- To promote oil palm cultivation in potential states.
Focus: Improving productivity of oilseed crops like mustard, groundnut, sesame.
Strategies:
- Cluster demonstrations on improved production technologies.
- Farmer training, IPM (Integrated Pest Management) practices.
Targets
- Increase domestic edible oil production to significantly reduce imports.
- Promote sustainable cultivation with improved varieties and climate-smart practices.
- Enhance farmers' income through better productivity and assured price mechanisms.
Benefits of NMEO
- Farmers: Higher yield, assured procurement, price stability.
- Country: Reduced import dependency, improved edible oil security.
- Consumers: Stable edible oil prices, availability of locally produced oil.
Nodal Ministry
- Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare (MoA&FW) is the nodal agency for NMEO implementation.
